Dan DeLorenzo brings 20 years of experience building dataviz initiatives at the world’s most influential organizations. As the principal and founder of DGFX Studio, DeLorenzo produces impactful work across the design, media and technology disciplines. DeLorenzo is an expert in visual storytelling, from in-depth custom graphics journalism, to complex financial data visualization platforms.

In the years since DeLorenzo first joined the news graphics department at the New York Times, he has reported, designed and coded countless infographics, built three departments from scratch, and led the development of data visualization platforms using every technology available, from home-brewed low-level mapping tools to today’s turnkey visualization tools, like Tableau.

Bridgewater Associates 2017-2020

Bridgewater began as a client for DGXF Studio, but the engagement quickly evolved into a full-time position helping to create a new data visualization function at the leading organization. 

As a Visual Engineer, DeLorenzo bridged the gap between analysts, data engineers and software developers at the world’s largest hedge fund. DeLorenzo interfaced with Bridgewater’s world-renowned macro economists to design dashboards for a proprietary platform, producing timeless compoundable content from Bridgewater’s vast data system to support research directed by the CIOs. Along the way, DeLorenzo expanded his knowledge of economics, data analytics, engineering, UX design and product management

United Nations OCHA

Prior to Bridgewater, DeLorenzo founded the Visual Media Unit at the United Nations, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

At the UN’s OCHA Visual Media Unit, DeLorenzo both worked directly on the floor of the UN’s General Assembly, and in the theatre of crises around the world. In his role as Public Information Officer, DeLorenzo created a program that provided a complete visual resource for OCHA, including infographics and reporting to film and advocacy campaign design.

Bloomberg News

In 2006, Dan built the News and Information Graphics Team at Bloomberg News, assembling and leading a team of 12 reporters, artists, and developers. The department quickly evolved into an industry-leading graphics powerhouse that still operates to this day. DeLorenzo’s team delivered award-winning coverage, most notably during the financial crisis of 2008, by embedding with each news desk in the Bloomberg Newsroom to support both daily and investigative coverage.

In addition to producing the first interactive features to come out of Bloomberg’s newsroom, the team supported Bloomberg’s terminal, web, and television channels with insightful custom reported graphics. Simultaneously, the department’s team of software developers and editors developed automated content from Bloomberg’s vast data systems for hundreds of syndication clients such as Tages-Anzeiger and Clarin.

The Wall Street Journal

DeLorenzo joined the Wall Street Journal’s newsroom graphics department in 2005. At the Wall Street Journal, DeLorenzo produced daily and investigative graphics coverage, and introduced cartography to the newsroom. In this example, an investigative graphics package was the first from any newsroom to detail the bursting of the home price bubble that led to the 2008 financial crisis.

The Associated Press

Years at the Associated Press Graphics department gave Dan exposure to every beat in the newsroom and every discipline in infographics production, from producing hand illustrations, to leading the development of the first automated real-time mapping system for US Elections.

The New York Times

DeLorenzo began his dataviz journey at the News Graphics department at the New York Times. DeLorenzo’s role as a graphics editor set the stage for a career of graphics-reporting innovation.
